Audiology is a branch of science that studies hearing, balance, and related disorders. Practitioners treat patients with hearing loss using various types of testing to determine whether someone can hear within the normal hearing range.

 

An Audiologist is a health-care professional specialising in identifying, diagnosing, treating and monitoring disorders of the auditory and vestibular systems.

 

Audiologists are trained to diagnose, manage and treat hearing, tinnitus, or balance problems. They dispense, manage, and rehabilitate hearing aids and assess candidacy for implants.

 

In addition to testing hearing, Audiologists also work in rehabilitation. Patients with tinnitus, auditory processing disorders, implant users and hearing aid users, from paediatric needs to the elderly, can be assisted. Many Audiologists work as auditory scientists in a research capacity.

 

Counselling families through a diagnosis of hearing loss in infants is part of an Audiologist’s role as well as to assist and help teach coping and compensation skills to adults with a hearing impairment.
